The 50th anniversary is a golden jubilee in most cultures. The 'golden wedding' is a symbol of a strong union. In Judaism, every 50th year is a 'jubilee year' (Yovel), when debts are forgiven and slaves freed.

The USA consists of 50 states. Alaska and Hawaii were the last to join in 1959. The US flag has 50 stars, one for each state, and 13 stripes honoring the 13 original colonies.
