Seventy-six — year of US independence

On July 4, 1776, the US Declaration of Independence was adopted, proclaiming the separation of 13 colonies from Britain. The number 76 became a symbol of American freedom. The 'Spirit of '76' has run through the entire history of the country.

Halley's Comet has an orbital period of about 75–76 years. It was observed in 1835, 1910, and 1986. The next flyby is expected in 2061. Its study allowed Edmond Halley to prove the periodicity of comets.

'Seventy-Six Trombones' is the famous song from the musical The Music Man (1957) by Meredith Willson. It became one of the most recognizable marches in American musical culture.
