Magna Carta — June 15, 1215
On June 15, 1215, English barons forced King John to sign the Magna Carta. For the first time in history, the power of a monarch was limited by law. This is the foundation of democracy, constitutional law and human rights.

Habeas corpus grew from Magna Carta
Article 39 of the Magna Carta is the prototype of the habeas corpus principle: no one can be imprisoned without trial. This principle is enshrined in all democratic constitutions worldwide, including the US Bill of Rights.

Four original copies — priceless
Of the original 1215 Magna Carta manuscripts, only four survive. Two are held in the British Library, and one each in Lincoln and Salisbury cathedrals. They are recognized as UNESCO Memory of the World items.
