Galileo discovers Jupiter's moons

In January 1610, Galileo Galilei pointed his telescope at Jupiter and discovered its four largest moons. The Starry Messenger permanently changed humanity's view of the Universe.

On 14 May 1610, King Henry IV of France — 'Good King Henri' who reunited France after the religious wars — was assassinated in Paris. Power passed to the young Louis XIII.
