Millennium and the Y2K problem

On January 1, 2000, humanity greeted the new millennium. Celebrations took place worldwide — from Sydney to New York. The question 'is 2000 or 2001 the true start of the millennium?' remained a subject of debate.

Programmers of the 1960s–70s stored the year as two digits (99 instead of 1999). The transition to 2000 could reset all dates and cause global collapse. The world spent ~$300 billion fixing code. No catastrophe occurred — thanks to those expenditures.

The turn of the millennium was marked by a cultural explosion. In 2000: Madonna's 'Music', Eminem's 'The Marshall Mathers LP' were released, and Napster was founded — a service that forever changed the music industry.
