1000 in decimal = 8 in binary (1000₂ = 8₁₀). In the metric system, the prefix 'kilo-' = 1000. But in computing, 1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes (2¹⁰), creating confusion resolved only in 1998 with the introduction of 'kibibyte'.
